Water Saving Ideas for World Water Day

In celebration of World Water Day on Tuesday, we thought we’d share a few ways that you can help conserve water, any maybe save a little money too.

World Water Day

World Water Day is a global event that takes place every year on March 22nd. It is organised by the UN as a way to raise awareness for worldwide issues surrounding water, sanitation and hygiene. World Water Day has been going since 1993, each year held with a different theme. This year it’s Water and Jobs, which focuses on the 1.5 billion people worldwide who work in water related sectors. Keeping with the spirit of World Water Day, we would like to offer a few tips for adjustments you can make in your home to conserve water and help make a difference.

Freshwater is a limited resource

Freshwater is a limited resource that we tend to take for granted here in Australia. While we are lucky enough to have easy access to freshwater right now, this may not be the case in the future and although there are alternative sources of water, they take an environmental toll that we can’t really afford. Thankfully, there are many things that you can do in your home to help reduce your water and energy use at little or no cost. In fact, you’ll actually end up saving money in the end, and possibly even the planet.

One of the simplest things you can do, and one you should probably do regardless, is making sure you get any leaks in your home repaired right away. Not only can water leaks cause serious damage to your home, you’d be surprised to hear just how much water a small leak can add to your bill. For example, a leaking toilet, that can easily go unnoticed, can waste up to 25 litres of water per day.

Another change you can make that won’t affect your life at all, but has a huge impact, is having water efficient fixtures and appliances installed. Next time you’re in the market for a washing machine, dishwasher or hot water system, make sure you check out its energy and water efficiency rating before you buy. For a small, immediate difference, speak to a plumber about changing your taps and shower heads to ones that are water smart and will reduce the amount of hot water you need to use.

Smart Metering is a great way to keep your water use on track. They’re even able to detect leaks by monitoring your water consumption and spotting abnormal water use patterns. It will let you know whenever something isn’t quite right allowing you to fix the problem right away. Smart Meters can be used to monitor and capture a range of data that will give you a better picture of your water use.

There are all sorts of new technologies helping us reduce water consumption and waste, but one of the best things you can do is simply make some small adjustments to your behaviour. Things like turning off the tap while you brush your teeth, choosing native plants for your garden, using a pool cover to avoid water evaporation or not turning on your dishwasher until it is completely full can all add up to big water reduction and big savings.

We have come a long way in the past few years with more and more people becoming conscious of just how precious water is, thanks to events like World Water Day. There are so many ways that you can help conserve and even if you just start with one change, you will be making a difference. World Water Day is a great reminder that not everyone is as lucky as we are to have fresh, clean water at our fingertips. Be thankful, be smart and do what you can to reduce your water use.
